The Lucky Bread Company is known for its specialty crafted coffee, artisan bread and an authentic culinary experience, as with the products, the design had to reflect these same principles. Each of the three Lucky Bread Stores have their own identity which responds to its setting and client base while still reflecting the core essence of the brand. The Mall of Africa branch combines the industrial, honest character of the previous shops with the high-end, luxurious tone of the mall, standing out for its individuality and authenticity.

Creating a presence in the vast mall landscape was a challenge as the shop doesn’t have clearly defined boundaries, such as shopfronts or walls one would expect to find in traditional stores. In response to this, the slatted timber roof serves as the primary place-making element, creating a canopy over the shop. Eight columns made up of steel angles form the main structure of the shop with timber clad counters that serve as functional work-space.

In terms of programme, efficiency and productivity played a key role as the prep-kitchen is away from the shop and space was minimal; work-flow had to be planned in accordance to the requirements of each zone – beverages, retail, food prep, food display.

The material palette of the shop is simple and raw, consisting of unfinished Poplar timber and steel with pops of colour that link with the characteristic red logo and branding, including more delicate details such as the hanging food display and waiter station screens.

In its entirety the restaurant creates an atmosphere its cliental would not normally expect to find in the cavernous extents of a shopping centre, allowing it to stand out as the beacon of authenticity it was intended to be from the inception of the brief. In a world defined by fast-paced interactions, often only as warm as the touch of our digital devices, Lucky Bread Mall of Africa attempts to bring us back to authentic, memorable experiences.
