The new headquarters for the Department of Environmental Affairs is a pioneering building in several respects. It was procured as a Public Private Partnership Project, leased for 25 years by Government, after which it will be transformed into a commercial office building. This need for flexibility was resolved by means of a prominent, curved entrance block, flanked by several rectangular, modular office blocks, each containing a central atrium.
The building contains a number of characteristics that justify its 6-star rating, including rainwater harvesting and innovative climate management solutions. In spite of its size of more than 27,000m2 and governmental function, the building is human-scaled, friendly and welcoming.
