In memory of the architect, Ian Alexander, whose dedication shaped the architectural landscape for over five decades, we proudly introduce the Ian Alexander Memorial Lecture – an annual celebration of architects who, like Ian, have committed their careers to the advancement of the profession.

HOW TO PROFIT FROM ARCHITECTURE: THE JOURNEY OF AN URBANIST

About our laureate:
Gerrit Jordaan joined the firm Daan Kesting Architects in 1980 then Holm and Holm Architects in 1981 and became a partner in 1983. He was instrumental in building the firm into an interdisciplinary environmental consultancy, specializing in URBAN DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE, HERITAGE, HOUSING, RESEARCH, and SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. The Jordaan Group merged with GWA Studio in 2018 to form NEWURBAN. He is currently a director of the NEWURBAN GROUP of Companies with offices in Pretoria and Cape Town and associated offices in Africa.
Newurban has won several local, national, and international awards since 1961 till 2021. The firm competed in and won National and International Competitions from 1961 till 2015 or was included in the top lists.

Currently Gerrit Jordaan is part of several multidisciplinary teams involved in architecture and urban design projects, the formulation of policy documents, as well as urban management tools for local authorities.

He is a member of the South African Institute for Architects and served on the Practice Committee of the then Transvaal Institute of Architects. He was chairman of the Pretoria Architectural Society (PAS) from 1992 to 1995. He was involved in the establishing of the Pretoria Institute for Architecture (PIA) and was the first President of the Pretoria Institute for Architecture from 1995 to 1998. Gerrit was admitted as a member of the International Institute for Urban Design in 1994 and The Urban Design Institute of South Africa (UDISA) in 2006. He was Chairperson of UDISA for two terms and is currently still actively involved with UDISA.

Gerrit was over the years, an external examiner for the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria and Tshwane University of Technology in the Architecture, Urban Design and Town Planning Faculties. He contributed to various lectures and conferences on urban design and environmental issues.

With more than 40 years in private practice in urban design, architecture and environmental management, numerous projects for public and private institutions have been completed within an environmental consultancy firm, which has a track record of more than 60 years.
