would like to invite you to attend a workshop on
Expert Witness Training

This full-day course is aimed at role-players within the built environment industry who currently are expert witnesses in dispute resolution proceedings or role-players who want to act as expert witnesses in the future. Delegates will gain an understanding of what it means to be an expert witness in Adjudication and Arbitration proceedings and the different requirements required of each. This course will give delegates an insight into their obligations as expert witnesses and enable them to efficiently fulfil their duties as expert witnesses.

This Workshop consists of 3 Sessions on the same day:

Session 1            08:00 – 10:00

Session 2            10:20 – 12:30

Session 3            13:00 -15:00

Session 4            15:10 – 17:00

Cost:      R1150.00(incl. Vat) per PIA Member
R1550.00(incl. Vat) per Non-Member

− Introduction: what does it mean to be a witness
− The expert witness must be credible, objective and unbiased
− Oral testimony / written report
Session 2
− A brief overview of Adjudication
− A brief overview of Arbitration
− How the two processes differ
Session 3
− What is required of an expert witness during adjudication?
− How to take instruction from the client
− Who is your client / who do you have a duty towards?
− Scope of your instruction
− Drafting an expert report
Session 4
− What is required of an expert witness during arbitration?
− How to take instruction from the client
− Who is your client / who do you have a duty towards?
− Scope of your instruction
− Drafting an expert report
− Oral testimony and credibility of a witness
− How to handle questions directed to you by the arbitrator
− Cross-examination
− Keep to your mandate
