Muhammad Mayet graduated from the university of witwatersrand and founded mayet architects in 1983. A major focus has been privilege space and its power to elevate, dignify and provide a better quality of life. Innovating but always striving to maintain a dialogue between architecture and place. A Harvard Fellowship in 1989 allowed me to pursue an urban design program at the GSD leading to many new opportunities and collaborations including being one of eight international architects invited for the Al Haram Vision 2020 proposal Makkah, Saudi Arabia. On my return I formed a partnership with the late Prof Roelof Uytenbogaardt (UPD) and together we completed the Urban Development Framework for Park City (Transnet) and the Development Framework Plan for Kliptown (COJ). My personal interest in islamic sacred space drew me to the work of Prof Abdelwahid El Wakil ( Aga Khan Award and Driehaus Award winner) . This mentor relationship has evolved into many collaborations both architectural and in urban design. Another important component of our work is pro bono, taking on projects that are rooted in ethical values and offers opportunity to create relevant design in far flung locations in Mozambique, Malawi, DRC and Zanzibar.
