NCS Colour Course 2018

Day 2 – Advanced Colour Design

A
one day course with in-depth discussions on the interaction of colours and how a designer works within colour design. We continue working with colour areas and colour combinations for interior and exterior design.

Advanced exercises, with degree and relationship similarities

This module includes exercises that train the ability to recognize similarities and differences between colours and to understand and to be able to use the symbols to record these similarities and differences.  These exercises are advanced tasks in analysing and grouping colours according to visual similarities within a certain group.  These exercises deepen the understanding for similarities of degree and correlation and for the systematic arrangement of colours. The degree of difficulty in these exercises is considerably greater than in the previous exercise, suitable for group study.

K2 SIMULTANEOUS CONTRAST – LIGHTNESS

Shows with a grey scale how the lightness of a colour sample changes according to the background and how this background influence can be compensated for. 13 colour samples of format 23 x 23 mm

K4 SIMULTANEOUS CONTRAST –HUE, NUANCE

Shows how a sample changes colour in different ways through the influence of the background. By placing the same colour sample on eight different backgrounds, it is possible to study how the colour changes in hue, whiteness, blackness and chromaticness.

K3 SIMILARTY IN COLOUR ATTRIBUTES Hue

Similarity in hue. Trains the ability to recognize similarities between colours. The colour samples provide examples of the natures of the similarities in different attributes.

K5 SIMILARITY IN NUANCE

The exercise shows the special similarity in character, which can be found in colours with the same whiteness. Blackness and chromaticness, i.e. of colours varying only in hue. People say e.g. The same colour as the green, but blue”.

12 colour samples of format 23 x 23 mm

K3 SIMILARTY IN COLOUR ATTRIBUTES W,B & C

Similarity in whiteness, blackness, chromaticness.

Trains the ability to recognize similarities between

colours. The colour samples provide examples of the

natures of the similarities in different attributes.

K6 SIMILARITIES IN COLOUR ATTRIBUTES

Trains the ability to recognise and analyse a specific similarity in colours, the other attributes of which vary.  Similarities in hue, blackness, whiteness and chromaticness.

K6 Φ – Similarity in Hue

K6 w – Similarity in Whiteness

K6 s – Similarity in Blackness

K6 c – Similarity in Chromaticness

K7  SIMILARITIES IN NUANCE

Three groups of colours with varying nuances.

The exercise contains 27 different colour samples.

D5 – GROUP EXERCISE QUADRANT IN A SQUARE

The exercise includes a total of 121 different NCS colour samples with an exercise sheet in A3 format.  It is the largest and most exacting exercise, which, even a trained eye may have difficulty with.  A very absorbing exercise, it may favourably be solved in small groups, where the students can discuss and help each other.

Each student is asked to bring a small project, perhaps a current design where the colouring has been problematic.
Each student will receive a Colour Wheel, a Colour Triangle as well as a Colour Mask.
The students will receive a folder with the exercises for reference purposes.
